Selecting master artisans: the quality of the hands before the price

Selecting a master artisan for the renovation of a flagship boutique or a palace is nothing like a standard supplier listing. The primary criterion is neither the hourly rate nor production capacity. It is the quality of the most recent work delivered.

A network, not just an address book

An address book can be put together in a few months. A network of master artisans is built over years. It is grounded in recommendation: a workshop joiner vouches for a fellow metalworker, a plaster specialist recommends a decorative painter, a marble worker directs you to a particular plaster moulding workshop. This chain of trust is the backbone of a Maison general contractor dedicated to prestige projects.

Krapted does not shortlist any master artisan through a tender process. The Maison meets them, visits the workshop, looks at the pieces in progress, and speaks with the project managers who have already worked with them. This approach extends the design phase and reduces risk during execution.

Seven trades, seven signatures

At the heart of the Krapted network are seven trades found on almost all prestige retail and hospitality projects:

  • Workshop joinery: bespoke fittings, display cases, counters, marquetry
  • Art metalwork: bronze, brass, patinated steel, oil or fire finishes
  • Decorative plasterwork and staff: mouldings, domes, coves, technical suspended ceilings
  • Marble work: sourcing of premium stone blocks, layout planning, hand polishing
  • Decorative painting: traditional lacquers, glazes, faux wood, faux marble
  • Upholstery: banquettes, bed canopies, tufted headboards
  • Glasswork and mirrors: blown glass, antiqued mirrors, decorative sandblasting

Each project brings together a bespoke team. A master artisan approved for a flagship boutique is not automatically called on for a palace. The brief defines the team.

What the selection rules out

Selecting a master artisan is not about choosing the lowest bidder. It is about choosing the finest workmanship. Price is negotiable, craftsmanship deserves respect.

Three criteria immediately disqualify a master artisan from a Krapted project:

  • Exclusively industrial production, with no craft workshop
  • An inability to prototype before execution
  • A refusal to document technical decisions in writing

These criteria are non-negotiable. They protect the client and the schedule.

Transmission, a condition for lasting success

A network of master artisans can only endure if the workshops pass on their expertise. Krapted favours workshops that train, that host apprentice Compagnons du Devoir or students from specialist schools. This stance is not philanthropic. It secures the availability of know-how in ten years’ time, when today’s projects call for a touch-up, an extension, a replica.

Entrusting a flagship boutique to Krapted, a French Maison and general contractor, is entrusting its interior to a network that passes on its know‑how.
